First, I would like to congratulate the following who were promoted by Royler Gracie:

Purple Belts-
Gordon Emery
Breagan Wood
Dave Morris
Detlef Morrison
Totrakool Sap
Detrick Monroe

Holly Richardson and Mike Butler - 1 stripe blue belt

Mark Kringlen, Adam Tacey, Mike - blue belts

I've worked hard and now have in my mind closed the book on my stint as the BJJ instructor here in Charlottesville. Some ranks were long overdue. I am happy to say that I started my school as a purple belt and now I am leaving the school in the hands of a well qualified purple belt.

Thank you all who came to the seminar.

Because of the poor attendance, I am canceling Rob Kahn's seminar.

Congrats to Dima and Jesse. They both received their blue belts from Greg on June 9th. Also congrats to Breagan who received his third stripe.

In addition, on June 1st Orion received his orange belt, Nate and Aaron received their yellow belts and Lauren received a stripe on her yellow/white belt.

Once again, congratulations to you all.

Congratulations to Lamonte and Kim. On May 6th Kim was promoted to Judo brown belt and Lamonte received his judo black belt. Job well done you two!

In addition, Lisa Damico, at 140 pounds, went to Switzerland on May 5th and won the Advance Heavyweight Division. Even more unbelievable, she wore her Team ROC shirt and the Swiss knew of the team.

Thanks to the team who helped us prepare for this event and thanks Breagan for your support at the event as well as keeping us hydrated and providing us with bananas and protein bars.

We had a big showing from the Team ROC guys in North Carolina as well. If a team trophy was to be given out, Team ROC would have won it. Team ROC was announced almost every time winners were announced at the podium.

Congratulation Breagan “The General” Wood and Daniel Clark.

Danny drove to New Jersey this past weekend and competed in the NAGA Worlds. He won both the heavyweight white belt GI and the heavyweight intermediate divisions. In the GI division, Danny had 12 people in it, and 10 in the No-GI division. He swept through both divisions without even getting scored on. All but two matches were won by submissions.

Danny’s most notable win was against the #2, 205 pound wrestler in the State of New Jersey from when Danny was in high school. Danny was # 2 in New Jersey as the 185 pound wrestler. These two were evenly matched, but his opponent still could not score on him.

Breagan came to fight with a carefree attitude. His goal was not to win or lose, but to have fun and not get hurt.

After doing some research 2 days prior to his fight, Breagan found out that his opponent have been training in Muay Thai Kickboxing for 15 years and during that time, he also instructed at a Relson Gracie affiliate school. He has also competed in several MT fights. His opponent is a Relson Gracie purple belt who is now training at one of the Team ROC affiliate schools.

Breagan came into the fight with a 0-1-1 record and his opponent came into the fight with a 2-0 record winning both by KO. When the fight went to the ground, Breagan first escaped the mounted position dropped a bunch of knees, threw a lot of punches and then put on a Jiu Jitsu clinic. 2:58 of the 1st round, Breagan finished his opponent with an armbar.

Wikipedia:
A General is an officer of high military rank. The term is used by nearly every country in the world. General may be a rank on its’ own, or can be used as a generic term for all grades of general officer.

Danny and Breagan are our Hero! And you know this maaannnn!!!!!!!!!!!!

We aren’t spending all that time rolling around on the ground for nothing!

Congrats to the men: Breagan "The General" Wood and Danny “Mr. Muscles” Clark, and the whole Charlottesville Team Roc/Gracie Jiu Jitsu Team! You have done us proud!

Team ROC - Virginia will be hosting the following Skyline Invitational tournament on May 19th. Check out this flyer for more information.

March 4, 2007
Congratulations to Daniel Clark. Danny competed in 3 divisions in the Arnold Classic on Saturday in Ohio. He won the white belt Super Heavyweight and the White Belt Open Divisions. He took 2nd in the GI open division losing to a purple belt. Danny won all of his matches via submission - even submitting blue belts. This is truly an accomplishment for someone with only 3 months BJJ experience.

March 3, 2007
Congratulations to Kim Carpenter and William “Bill” Calvani. March 1st, they were both promoted to blue belt by Rolker Gracie.

February 19, 2007
There was a great display of talent this past weekend in New Jersey. Daniel Clark, Bill Calvani and Lamonte Tyler competed in Grappler’s Quest. This was an extremely long day. The day started out for Bill around 7:00 or 8:00 a.m. and Danny around 10:00. Bill’s last match was around 8:30 p.m. He and Danny both took 2nd place in the No-GI Division. Fatigue took over. In my opinion, this event was not at all organized because I, Lamonte Tyler was asked to referee around 7:00 knowing that I still had to compete. 13 hours after being there, I finally competed in my 1st match. We started off with 6 people in my division. Never before in GQ do you have that many purple belts in the heavyweight division. I finished 3rd. I went in for a throw and slipped. The ref gave my opponent takedown points and my opponent was shocked as well to even get points. Because of it being a long day, I believe this is why the ref gave out those points so I lost that match 2 – 0.

Lamonte Tyler’s former student, Brent Elrod, 2 stripe blue belt, Level II Modern Army Combatives Instructor moved to Houston, Texas and started his own BJJ program catering to the early birds. Brent currently holds classes at 5:30 a.m. Congratulations Brent! You can visit his website here.

Congratulations to the following of The Academy of P.H.A.T. Jiu Jitsu, Gordon and Bill, and from American FreeStyle Academy, Daniel, Kendall, Stephen, Brian, and Cody. They all competed on Saturday, September 30th in the WKA East Coast Grappling Championships 3.

Gold
Gordon – GI and No-GI
Daniel – No-GI

Silver
Bill – 2 divisions No-GI
Brian – No-GI

Bronze
Bill – GI
Kendall – No-GI
Stephen – No-GI

Gordon, who hated the triangle, but was forced to learn it in his early career of Jiu Jitsu won 2 matches back to back with that submission.

Daniel was accidentally thrown in a heavier division and still won.

This was Brian and Bill’s 1st tournament. Bill weighing only 140 pounds was thrown in a division with guys outweighing him by 20 – 40 pounds.

Cody (9), the only youth to compete from the school who has only been training in BJJ less than 6 months was placed in the GI and No-GI divisions with kids who have been training in Jiu Jitsu 2-3 years. Being the lightest in his division, he gave the kids a run for their money. His positive attitude, attention to detail, determination, and spirit after his matches made the team and me the most proudest. This young kid has a bright future in this sport.

Recent news article - Jiu Jitsu Takes Over During Judo Tournament

Lamonte Tyler was convinced the Charlottesville Judo Academy could never win a team trophy at a large invitational tournament. Competing against teams six times its size, the numbers were stacked too high against them.

“When we compete, we never bring enough people to win the team trophy,” Tyler said.

At the Eastern Open in Beltsville , Md., on Aug. 19, the Charlottesville team found a way to defy the numbers. Sending a team of only five people in the senior division, the Charlottesville team had five first-place finishes; enough to give the tournaments smallest group the overall team trophy.

Tyler, Kurban Komilov, Kim Carpenter and Gordon Emery all finished in first place in a tournament that included teams from Connecticut, Pennsylvania, New York and North Carolina and featured more than 350 entrants in the junior and senior divisions.

Led by sensei Tim Redden, the Charlottesville Judo Academy meets twice a week at the Piedmont YMCA building in Charlottesville . Redden, who has been in town for almost 10 years, has seen his program grow steadily.

“If we had 12 people in the class back then, it was a big class,” said Redden, who served as a volunteer at the 1996 Olympics, where he catalogued each judo match and communicated with the foreign press. “Now, we have had as many as 30 kids on the mat at one time, and that’s actually too big for this room.”

His facility features a new $12,000 custom-fit mat and a larger space to accommodate the increasing numbers of people showing up Tuesday and Friday nights to learn from Redden. Even the first-place finishers at the Eastern Open are relative newcomers to the sport. Emery, who took the middleweight title, was competing in his first judo tournament. He has been training in jiu-jitsu for the past two years ago and has competed in several jiu-jitsu tournaments. In early 2005, he started to learn judo, as well.

Tyler is a jiu-jitsu instructor who also teaches kickboxing and coaches youth wrestling. He started taking judo 2 year to build a more comprehensive martial arts repertoire.

“Judo is the best thing to happen to me while in Charlottesville as a student,” said Tyler, who finished in first place in the master’s heavyweight division and third in the 100-kilogram-and-over division. “In order to be successful in martial arts, you’re not complete unless you know how to throw. Unless you know how to take your opponent down, you’re not complete.”

Komilov, a native of Russia , has been interested in judo his entire life but is only a high school student. He moved up to compete with adults in the Eastern Open and took first place in the senior novice lightweight division. Carpenter, also a jiu-jitsu student of about 3 months, a graduate student at the University of Virginia , finished first in the women’s lightweight division.

The club also had four juniors competing in the tournament, with Ruslan Usmanov and Ibraim Mushtalov taking third place in the 15-16 lightweight and 11-12 lightweight divisions, respectively. Pablo-Redden Gonzalez and Stuart Champion also competed as juniors but did not place.

The first-place sweep by the adult competitors was less of a surprise than the finishes earning enough points for the team trophy. He hadn’t even considered his team’s chances of winning, but when Emery heard his team announced as the winner, it made perfect sense to him.

“I hadn’t really noticed it, but right at that moment I was like ‘Oh yeah, we all did win first place,’” Emery said.

As the senior member of the team, Tyler had the honor of accepting the trophy on behalf of the squad, holding in his hands what he thought his team would never be able to achieve.

“It amazed me,” Tyler said. “I was most impressed with the training we all received. That right there that shows that if you have good training, regardless of how many people you have, you can accomplish the unthinkable.”

Congrats to Kim Carpenter, Jesse Mattysee and Breagan Wood. They all competed in the George Pendergrass Classic tournament September 9th and did extremely well considering each one of them had to compete with opponents at minimum 15 pounds heavier. Kim actually had 1 opponent 50 pounds heavier then her.

Kim won gold in the Women's Lightweight Division and silver in the Women's Absolute Division. Breagan won silver in the Men's Lightweight Division. Jesse went out to have fun. With less than 1 month of training, he gave an extremely good show. In the Featherweight Division, there were 11 competitors which made it hard for this beginner to medal.

This past weekend doing Copa Atlantica, 4 of our teammates: Gordon Emery, Jim Whitten, Detlef Morrison, and Mike Fujinaka ,all competed and did extremely well. Due to injuries, Detlef had to forfeit his Gi division and settled for the Bronze. Bad calls by the referee almost cost Gordon his match, but at the last minute, Gordon came up with a reversal and a textbook submission. Mike came out with less than one month of Jiu Jitsu experience and still took Silver in his Division. He was defeated by someone who had over two years experience. If he sticks with it, he will have a bright future. This week will be his last week with us. He will be returning to California where he will continue his training. Jim competed in two divisions. He took home the Gold in the first division and being the modest person that he is, he decided to forfeit in the second division after winning his semi-final round. This allowed the person that he defeated to fight for 1st and 2nd place. He explained to me that he already had a Gold so there was no need to be greedy. He still took home a Bronze in that division. Congratulation to all of them and I want to thank everyone who helped get them prepared for this event.

June 13, 2005

Congratulations to everyone who recently got promoted:

Gerald - 4 stripe blue
Detlef - 3 stripe blue
Gordon - 2 stripe blue
Jun - 1 stripe blue

Also, Ted and Brent were promoted to blue on Friday, June 10, 2005 and Brian received his on Monday, June 13, 2005. Great job!

April 16, 2005

Bill and Lamonte both went to Goldsboro, NC to compete in MACS Extreme Challenge Grapplin Championship. It wasn't a large event but they both had some tough matches. Bill did extremely well for his first tournament. The same promoter will be putting another event on in June. This is a get your feet wet event. This will help you know where you stand and a learning experience for those who have never competed before. Congratulation to the both of you.

Also, Royce Gracie Black Belt, Rob Kahn has been confirmed for June 10th (Germantown, MD), June 11th (King William, VA), June 12th (Alexandria, VA), and June 13th (Charlottesville, VA). The cost for our school is $30.

August 13th, from 11:00 - 4:00, we will be having another In-House Tournament. The first was a huge success. Now, the purpose for this tournament is to help buy equipment for when we make the move to Gold's Gym in October. Thank you everyone.

April 9, 2005

Detlef Morrison, Gordon Emery, and Sarah Barden all went to Washington D.C. this weekend and competed in the 10th Annual Yamasaki Classic. Sarah is not officially one of our teammates, but I want to recognize her because she does come up on Sunday's and train with us. Everyone did exceptionally well. Detlef took gold in the Blue Belt Super Heavyweight Division. Gordon won Silver in the Blue Belt Lightweight Division. This is quite an accomplishment for someone who had been a blue belt for only one week. Sarah also took silver in her division. After watching her, she is ready for her blue belt. She trains hard and is a fast learner. Each and every one of you, keep up the good work! When you see them, please congratulate them.

April 5, 2005

Congratulations to Gordon Emery and Shareef Tahboub for both receiving their blue belts during Royce Gracie seminar March 31, 2005. Also, Gerald Boggs received his 3rd stripe and both Detlef Morrison and Ta Khong Sap received 2 strips. My blue belts are picking up. Job well done.

Team R.O.C. in the Spotlight

What was almost a disaster turned into an extraordinary event. With many obstacles in our way (Schedule, Last Minute Time Change, and Weather) the event still took place and was a huge success.

With 78 competitors in attendance, the event lasted 3 hours. Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is about knowing how to subdue your opponent as effective as possible without the use of force. Technique outweighs strength. 90% of all matches were won by submissions.

The purpose of this event was to raise money to buy patches, t-shirts, supplies and equipment for my school. Also, because I have a student from Thailand who spent his Christmas in Thailand, I wanted to raise money to help support the Tsunami Relief Effort. He and his family members are safe. They were supposed to go to the beach the same day of the Tsunami, but decided to do other things. For my school, I raised $1600.00 and $572.25 for the Tsunami Effort. $150 donation came from Dr. Tyrone
